Why Can the Same Custom Fastener Drawing Get Different Supplier Responses?

For OEM equipment manufacturers and machine builders, the same custom fastener drawing can sometimes receive very different supplier responses.

One supplier may quote directly. Another may ask about a tolerance or feature. A third may suggest a different manufacturing approach or decline to quote.

This does not necessarily mean the drawing is incomplete or that one supplier is right and another is wrong. The same drawing can define the same finished part while still leading suppliers to different manufacturing interpretations.

Why Can Supplier Responses Differ?

A drawing provides the final specifications, but it rarely dictates the exact machinery or step-by-step process a manufacturer must use. This flexibility often leads to diverging feedback based on a supplier's setup and perspective.

The same finished part does not always point to only one manufacturing approach. Depending on the geometry, material, quantity and required characteristics, suppliers may evaluate the part around different processes, equipment or production sequences.

02 · Critical Drivers

One Feature May Drive the Manufacturing Approach

Not every feature on a drawing has the same manufacturing impact. A tolerance, thread, length-to-diameter relationship, local geometry, surface requirement or treatment requirement may become the feature that influences how the part is manufactured.

03 · Complex Specifications

Requirements May Interact

Individual requirements may be achievable on their own while becoming more difficult to control together. Material, dimensions, tolerances, heat treatment and surface requirements can therefore affect the manufacturing approach as a combination—not only as separate specifications.

04 · Production Context

Project Conditions Matter

Prototype quantity, repeat-production volume, inspection requirements and production stage can also influence how a supplier evaluates the part. A manufacturing approach that fits one project condition may not fit another equally well.

What Do Different Supplier Responses Actually Tell You?

A direct quotation, a technical question, a request to change a requirement or a no-quote response does not automatically tell you which supplier has the better manufacturing solution.

Different supplier responses partly reflect the manufacturing assumptions behind each supplier's proposed approach.

Core Principle The useful question is not simply which response is correct, but what is driving the difference and whether the proposed manufacturing approach fits the part and the project.

When Is the Difference Worth Reviewing?

Different supplier responses become especially worth reviewing when the differences begin to affect a real sourcing or engineering decision.

  • One supplier quotes the part normally while another quotes significantly higher.
  • One supplier accepts the drawing while another asks for a tolerance, feature, or other requirement to be changed.
  • MOQ or lead time differs significantly between suppliers for the same part.
  • Several suppliers raise questions about the same feature or requirement.
  • One supplier declines to quote a part that others consider manufacturable.

These differences do not prove that one supplier is right or wrong. They are signals that the manufacturing assumptions behind the responses may be worth comparing.

What Should Be Reviewed Before Comparing the Responses?

When the same drawing receives significantly different feedback, stepping back to analyze the underlying reasons can provide clarity.

Consider evaluating the responses against these core questions:

Which requirement or feature is driving the difference?
What manufacturing approach is each supplier assuming?
Is the concern related to feasibility, process fit, production volume or verification?
Would changing a requirement solve a real project constraint, or mainly make one manufacturing approach easier?

Understanding what sits behind each response can be more useful than comparing the responses at face value.

What Helps With a Manufacturing Review?

If you need to understand why suppliers are responding differently to the same part, the drawing alone may not tell the full story. Comparing the drawing with the responses and relevant project conditions can help identify what may be driving the differences.
