Why Is the MOQ So High for a Custom Part?
When the quantity your project needs is much lower than the MOQ proposed by a supplier, the minimum may not be determined by the part itself alone.
A high MOQ for a custom part can result from production setup, the manufacturing approach, material purchasing, secondary processes or the supplier’s production model. This means a high MOQ does not automatically mean the drawing inherently requires that minimum quantity.
High MOQ ≠ an unavoidable constraint of the part itself.
The more useful question is: What is actually creating the MOQ for this particular drawing and required quantity?
What Can Create a High MOQ?
For drawing-based custom parts, MOQ can be influenced by several manufacturing and production factors.
Setup Costs Are Disproportionate for Small Orders
Custom parts may require programming, machine setup, tooling, fixtures or first-piece verification before production begins. When similar preparation is required for 20 pieces and 2,000 pieces, a very small order can carry a disproportionately high setup cost. The MOQ may therefore reflect production preparation rather than part difficulty alone.
Different Routes Yield Different Economics
The same drawing may sometimes be produced through different manufacturing routes, and those routes do not necessarily have the same economics at every quantity. A route that fits repeat production well may not fit a small batch equally well. This does not mean another route will necessarily reduce the MOQ. It means the relationship between the drawing requirements, manufacturing approach and required quantity may be worth reviewing.
Purchasing Minimums Define Batch Sizes
The amount of raw material needed for the parts may be smaller than the quantity that must actually be purchased. Special material grades, uncommon sizes, certification requirements or supplier purchasing minimums can therefore contribute to MOQ even when the part itself appears relatively straightforward.
External Batch Constraints
Heat treatment, plating, coating, grinding or other secondary processes may have their own minimum batch quantities or minimum charges. In these cases, the MOQ may reflect the economics of the complete manufacturing route, not only the primary manufacturing operation.
Different Manufacturers Are Optimized Differently
Different manufacturers are optimized for different types of work. A supplier focused on high-volume repetitive production may evaluate a small drawing-based order differently from a manufacturer accustomed to prototypes or small batches.
When Is a High MOQ Worth Reviewing?
It may be worth looking more closely at the MOQ when:
- your required quantity is much lower than the supplier’s MOQ;
- a relatively simple-looking part receives an unexpectedly high MOQ;
- different suppliers propose very different minimum quantities;
- the project quantity has changed and the previous sourcing arrangement no longer fits; or
- MOQ, cost and lead time are all beginning to constrain the project.
These situations do not prove that the MOQ is unreasonable. They indicate that it may be useful to understand what is actually driving the minimum quantity.
What Is Actually Driving the MOQ?
Supplier feedback can provide useful clues. Comments about setup or tooling may point to production preparation. Material minimums may indicate a purchasing constraint. Heat treatment or coating may introduce secondary-process batch requirements. Very different MOQs from different suppliers may indicate differences in manufacturing approach or production model.
But these are only indicators. MOQ alone is not enough to determine the cause.
A high MOQ does not prove that the current manufacturing approach is wrong, and another manufacturing approach does not automatically mean a lower MOQ. The purpose of the review is first to distinguish between a constraint created by the part requirements and one created by the conditions under which the part is currently being manufactured or sourced.
